Manchester's Meseums

There are several museums in Manchester, providing both locals and visitors a splendid opportunity to learn more about the area and the world in general.  The various museums tackle different aspects of history, providing opportunities for patrons to explore the past in a number of different ways.

The People's Museum, which is about to emerge from a top-to-bottom renovation provides a unique perspective on history.  While other museums often focus on the well-recognized leaders of the past and the way their decisions shaped the world, The People's Museum focuses exclusively on the way 'average people' lived and contributed to society's advances and changes.  It is the only British museum with that mandate and it promises to better than ever after remodeling concludes.

The Manchester Jewish Museum focuses on the Jewish experience within the city over the course of the last few centuries.  The museum is located within a former Portuguese and Spanish Synagogue.  It is a smaller specialty museum and does not get the attention some of the other installations receive.  Those who visit are usually quite impressed, however.

The Mossley Industrial Heritage Centre is another example of the smaller museums in Manchester.  It makes a point of showcasing the contribution of the city's mill workers and industrial history.  The fascinating photographs and artifacts on display bring onlookers a greater understanding of what it meant to be one of those who built the city into what it is today.

Not all museums in Manchester are small.  The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester is an extensive museum that focuses on the development of science and technology over the years, emphasizing Manchester's role in the process.  MOSI, as it is often called, is part of the European Route of Heritage and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The Museum of Transport is another of the many great targeted museums in Manchester.  It focuses on the history of public transportation in the area and features displays including once-used buses and coaches, restored to their original glory.

No discussion of the many museums in Manchester would be complete without mentioning the Manchester Museum operated by the University of Manchester.  This impressive collection of over six million artifacts from all around the world is recognized as one of the U.K.'s finest museum and is located within a gorgeous Gothic-styled campus building.

Those with an interest in history have many museum options in Manchester.  Museums range from the expansive MOSI and Manchester Museum to small specialty museums focusing on particular aspects of the past.  Manchester is a city that really brings history to life.  If you have an interest in history and are planning a trip to Manchester, be certain to add one or more of these wonderful resources to your itinerary.
